Auto bid seems to be malfunctioning - defaulting to maximum
AnsweredI have had two recent incidents when I have placed an auto-bid only to have it immediately jump to my maximum - even though I was the only bidder! While the amounts are not substantial it seems very suspicious as my maximums are often in 'particular' increments (.75 cents). I will not place any more auto-bids until this phenomenon is explained by someone from Trade Me.

Hi Malcolm. There are a few ways your autobid jumps to maximum. Over the years people always think there is something fishy going on, but once it's checked out there is always an explanation.
1. The reserve hasn't been met, so your bid jumps to max.
2. It matches an existing auto-bid.
3. Someone else bids the same amount.
4. Someone outbids you then that bid or member is removed for whatever reason.

Kia Ora Malcolm,
I'm a Member just like you, I'm not TradeMe staff,
I noted you said you are the only Bidder on Both occasions this has happened, is there any chance there was/is a Hidden Reserve on those Listings or were they Both a No Reserve Listing? - The auto-bid is placed instantly at it's maximum when the Reserve hasn't been met or if your maximum auto-bid met the Reserve.
Refer to the Help file Placing a bid – Help - Trade Me FAQ's - Cheers.

S Community SuperuserEditedKia Ora Malcolm,Placing an auto-bid automatically places a bid on the Listing therefore with no prior bids on the Listing there are no prior auto-bids in place. For your Auto-bid to jump to it's highest Maximum immediately it hasn't met an existing auto-bid as you are the only Bidder - it would have to be anyone bidding the exact same amount as your Highest auto-bid within a second later of that exact same time you placed your auto-bid for your Auto-bid to jump to it's Maximum immediately. - If someone had their bid removed you would have seen an initial bid on the Listing. - Removing a bid takes the Listing back prior to that bid being placed, it does not stay in placement once removed to trigger a higher bid placement. The only other way your Auto-bid can jump to its highest maximum Immediately is if there is a hidden Reserve - Reserve not met - on the Listing which your auto-bid either met or fell short of Or you didn't select the auto-bid button next to the bid.If there was no Hidden Reserve on those Listings you will need to contact TradeMe staff through "Live Chat" with your Listing numbers so they can investigate both situations - we are all Members here just like you - TradeMe staff would need to look into what has happened there - Cheers.0
