Can I still sell on Trade Me?
You can sell items in our approved essential categories while we are at alert level 4. However, you must follow the Government’s alert level 4 restrictions and our COVID-19 safe trading guidelines, to keep your fellow Kiwis safe. If you’re an in-trade seller wanting to sell essential items, please register as an essential business first.
Can I still buy items on Trade Me?
Essential items are still able to be purchased onsite.
For non-essential items, you can still bid, browse and add these to your Watchlist, but you’ll have to wait until after alert level 4 has been lifted to complete the purchase.
What are the requirements for selling essential items?
Your listing will need to:
- Be included in our list of approved essential categories.
- Have contactless payment – this can only be done via Ping or bank transfer. Professional sellers can also offer Afterpay.
- Have contactless shipping – buyers aren’t allowed to pick-up, we recommend using our ‘Book a courier’ service.
- Follow our COVID-19 safe trading guidelines.
- Follow our National Disaster & Civil Emergency policy.
How do I know what’s essential and what’s not?
We’ve created a list of approved essential categories. This will tell you what you can sell during alert level 4.
When will I be able to sell non-essential items again?
We’ll review what items can be sold onsite when we’re no longer at alert level 4.
I need help but you don’t have any staff in the call centre – who can help me?
Our Customer Support team is working from home which means our phone support is not available. You can visit our Help center, or get in touch with our Customer Support team via the ‘Contact us’ link at the bottom of any page. We’re also available on live chat from 10:00am–6:00pm Monday to Thursday.
I need to stop my auctions – will you waive my withdrawal fee?
Yes. You can withdraw your auction for free at this time.
I’ve paid for an item I can no longer receive, how can I get a refund?
The seller will be able to refund you, so flick them an email to get that sorted. Any trouble, get in touch and we’ll be able to help.
A buyer has already paid me but now I can’t get the item to them. What do I do?
Get in touch with the buyer to see if it’s OK to send the item once alert level 4 is lifted. If that’s not an option, you can agree to cancel the trade and apply for a success fee refund.
Can I offer pick-ups for essential items?
No. At this time all trades must be contactless. We recommend using our ‘Book a courier’ service for contactless delivery.
Is ‘Book a courier’ still available?
‘Book a courier’ is currently only available for listings in our approved essential categories.
I just purchased an item with Afterpay, what happens now?
We recommend getting in touch with the seller to follow up on the status of your item.
How do I take down my job ads, and will I be charged?
Go into your job ad and select “Withdraw”. There is no charge to remove your listing.
What happens to my car listing?
We understand it’ll take longer to sell so you’ll be able to relist for an extra 90 days for free. You’ll have the same listing option as you originally purchased. Remember, you have 45 days to relist your listing before it expires and is removed from the site.
I’ve just bought a car and now I can’t pick it up. What should I do?
Try working with the seller to see if you could pick up the vehicle once the level 4 restrictions are lifted. If that’s not an option, the seller will need to refund you. Any trouble, get in touch and we’ll be able to help.
The buyer who won my auction has said they don't want it anymore, and now my listing has closed.

Can I still have someone come and look at my car?
No – while we’re at alert level 4, everyone must stay home and avoid unnecessary travel. You can add a video of your vehicle to your listing so buyers get a good idea of what it looks like.
Can I test drive a vehicle I want to buy?
No – while we’re at alert level 4, everyone must stay home and avoid unnecessary travel.
I made a listing after 25 March, can I have it removed/refunded now?
No – any listing made after 25 March will not be refunded or credited. We understand it’ll take longer to sell so you’ll be able to relist for an extra 90 days for free. You’ll have the same listing option as you originally purchased. Remember, you have 45 days to relist your listing before it expires and is removed from the site.

Can I remove my auction and not pay the $49 withdrawal fee?
Yes – once you’ve removed your auction, we’ll waive the withdrawal fee.
I’m meant to be going to an open home this weekend, is it still on?
No – while we’re at alert level 4 everyone must stay home and avoid unnecessary travel. If you’re keen to check out a house during the level 4 restrictions you can contact the seller or agent to see if a video tour is possible.
I have a live listing but no one is able to view the property – can I have my listing fee refunded?
You’re able to extend your listing or relist for free. If you’ve listed through an agent, get in touch with them.
